Synopsis:
Aquaman and Mera save the crew of a freighter caught in a storm. They then return to Atlantis where Aquaman demands that Vulko turn over to throne to him. Vulko refuses, and Aquaman's behavior grows erratic. When a patrol craft is reported missing, Aquaman rushes to the scene in order to prove that Atlantis needs him.

The patrol craft went missing at the site of Aquaman's final confrontation with the Ocean Master. He finds a Soviet submarine in the area and boards it. A Russian scientist then explains that Professor Vladimir Magus found the artifacts used by Orm and they transformed him into a creature. The creature is consuming all life and growing rapidly.

Aquaman confronts the creature that is Magus and is drawn inside. Magus has created a psychic reality. He also tells Aquaman that during the battle with Ocean Master, the Sea King's astral self was separated and never returned to his body. If Aquaman interferes with the artifacts, he could cause part of himself to be lost forever. Aquaman battles the psychic challenges of Magus. He fails in his first three attempts, but one his fourth and final try Aquaman realigns one of the artifacts.

The world Magus created is destroyed. Aquaman is able to pull Magus free and by keeping him alive, he is also reunited with his missing astral self. Following the incident Aquaman believes he needs to maintain a balance between control and emotion.
