History:
Rex Tyler, nicknamed "Tick-Tock" Tyler, was a young chemist working at the Bannerman Chemical Company near New York City. He discovered a chemical compound that he named Miraclo, which could give him super-powers for an hour at a time. Using his discovery, Tyler became the masked crimefighter known as the Hourman.

The Hourman joined the Justice Society of America, and he began suffering from side effects as the result of taking his Miraclo pills, including a growing addiction to them. Therefore, he took a leave of absence from the Justice Society and began work on his "Miraclo machine," which would use a ray to give him his powers without any adverse effects.

Before Tyler was finished, he was recruited by the figure known as Uncle Sam to join his first team of Freedom Fighters to fight the Axis powers on Earth-X, a parallel world without any native super-heroes. Hourman was believed killed on that world, but almost three months later a new group of Freedom Fighters found him in captivity there. With their help, Hourman escaped and returned to his native Earth, where he joined the wartime All-Star Squadron. He began using the Miraclo machine instead of the pills to gain his powers.

Sometime in the 1940s Tyler retired as Hourman, and over the following years he rose to become president of the Bannerman Chemical Company, which he renamed the Tyler Chemical Company. Tyler returned to his Hourman career when the Justice Society was reactivated. By then he had developed Miraclo pills that had no side effects or addictive qualities. Tyler married Wendi Harris, an actress, and they had a son, Rick. Despite his father’s initial objections, Rick has become the second Hourman.

Powers:
By taking a chemical he had formulated called Miraclo, the Hourman can give himself superhuman strength (equal to that of about ten men), superhuman speed and stamina, and a degree of resistance to injury all for exactly one hour.

Originally, the Hourman took Miraclo in the form of a pill. However, the pills proved to be addictive and began causing other harmful side effects. The Hourman then developed a "Miraclo machine," which projected ultraviolet light that activated the Miraclo residue in his body, thereby giving him super-powers for an hour. Later, the Hourman developed Miraclo pills that had no harmful effects.

Even without his Miraclo-induced powers, the Hourman today retains an unusual degree of physical vitality for a man of his age, thanks to the temporal energy he absorbed decades ago from the villainous Ian Karkull.
