While traveling through the Dakotas, Strong Bow enters an abandoned village. He soon finds a pair of villagers who have stayed behind to care for their sick child. He learns that the others have fled because they fear him. They believe that Strong Bow himself has been threatening their village and demanding tribute.

To seek answers Strong Bow enters the nearby badlands. He survives an attack by enemy warriors, then encounters a giant formed in his image. Strong Bow battles the giant and causes it to fall. When it crashes to the ground, he learns that it was a constructed device created by Crooked Tongue, an evil indian with a grudge against Strong Bow. Since Crooked Tongue was killed when the giant fell, his followers give up the fight.
