His three rivals for the position know that Flying Stag will defeat them in the contests that will be used to elect the chief, so they set a trap for Flying Stag before he can reach the council.

Flying Stag falls into a deep pit and is pinned by a large stone. He prayed to manitou for help offering to sacrifice his own glory to save the tribe from his warlike rivals. Manitou grants his wish. A meteor falls to Earth and grants Flying Stag with super-human strength and speed. He can only use the powers for one hour, and he carries a piece of the meteor around on a necklace.

As part of his agreement, Flying Stag disguises himself with a buffalo head mask. He then attends the council meeting as Super-Chief. He outdoes each of the rival clan leaders in contests of skill and strength, then is elected Royaneh.

Angered by Super-Chief's victory, the three rival clan chiefs strike back. One causes an avalanche which threatens the council. Another rival starts a brush fire. Using his amazing powers, Super-Chief is able to protect the tribe from harm. The third clan leader conspire with an enemy tribe to attack. Super-Chief's powers have worn off, but he is able to rally his people. He teaches them to build catapults which repel the attack of the neighboring tribe. The three evil clan leaders are then exiled.

Flying Stag then returns to his clan. He must maintain his secret identity and does not reveal that he is Super-Chief. His betrothed White Fawn is upset, and now desires to marry the new Royaneh, Super-Chief.
