Comments:
This story takes place during three separate time periods.
The main sequence is a post-Crisis retelling of the story in Adventure Comics #316, in which Ultra Boy is expelled from the Legion.
A flashback shows Phantom Girl's life before she joined the Legion.
A second flashback takes place during the time when Ultra Boy joined the Legion. It retells parts of Superboy #98 which was the Earth-1 version of the same events.

In Earth-1 continuity, Zaryan was known as Meglaro. He and his gang, including Dr. Landro, appeared in Adventure Comics #303.

Synopsis:
After Ultra Boy is found to be a criminal on Rimbor, he is expelled from the Legion. Only Phantom Girl keeps the faith in him. With Ultra Boy expelled, the rest of the team, including Phantom Girl, begin tracking down some mystery raiders. During the search, Phantom Girl reflects on her own past.

Tinya Wazzo grew up on the phantom world of Bgztl where everyone had phasing powers. Her mother Winema was a leading authority on privacy law, which was extremely important on a world of phantoms. As a teen, Tinya and her boyfriend Qyk broke that law by crossing into a prohibited area. Qyk's phasing powers were removed, but Tinya was spared due to her mother's position.

Tinya was shipped off to a girl's school which she hated. However, she learned of the Legion of Super-Heroes which operated on Earth. Anxious to leave her own world, Tinya became involved with a smuggler named Kynar, who brought her to Earth. There she became mixed up with Zaryan and interplanetary invader. However, she stopped his plans and turned him over to the Science Police.

Tinya then joined the Legion alongside Triplicate Girl. At first it was fun, but Tinya was unimpressed with the boys on the team. When she was sent to Rimbor, she met Jo Nah, whom she quickly became enamored with. Phantom Girl petitioned R.J. Brande's advisor on Jo's behalf and after a brief tryout, Ultra Boy was inducted into the Legion.

Now, Phantom Girl misses Jo Nah despite the fact that he had shown little interest in her. She decides to track him down and finds him hiding in the ruins of a dead city. Jo Nah is then recruited by the same mystery raiders, that the Legion was tracking. Ultra Boy leads the raiders to Earth and passes through the Legion defenses. However, his expulsion turns out to be a ruse, designed to lure the raiders into a trap.

After the raiders are defeated, Ultra Boy thanks Phantom Girl for her faith and friendship. This upsets her because she wants more. When she presses the issue, she is able to earn a kiss. And so begins their relationship.
