Synopsis:
Arak has been held a prisoner for months inside the new Temple of Artemis constructed of trees in a small grove surrounding a golden bough. During that time he has been enthralled by the Amazons led by Dyanna. Arak renounces his past and even his name and become accepts his new title as priest of Artemis. After a ceremony with the Amazons, he takes Dyanna as his bride.
While Arak has been with the Amazons, Satyricus has been in the nearby town of Ephesus. He has taken up residence with Delan, a blind peasant who displays the satyr as a captive devil. Word of the attraction has spread to surrounding regions. The sorcerer Maximus breaks down Delan's door and kills him. He then captures Satyricus whom he plans to use in a rite which will grant him immortality.
Satyricus is chained and brought into the woods. For the first time in months he sees Arak, but the Quontaukan shows no sign of recognition for his old friend. Instead Arak raises his axe to kill the satyr.
