Synopsis:
Billy Hatton watches his father crash the car into a lamppost and apparently die in the resulting fire. The distraught boy is then guided home by the Phantom Stranger. A short time later, Cyrus Hatton walks in the door, alive, but in a trance like state. He claims that a mystic totem pole has granted him nine lives.

Cyrus attempts to prove his claim by jumping off a bridge into a river. This time, Dr. Thirteen is a witness. Once again Cyrus is thought to be dead, but he turns up alive.

Both the Phantom Stranger and Dr. Thirteen are present when Cyrus is nearly killed in the park when he unveils a stone obelisk built by his construction company. The Phantom Stranger saves Cyrus, who finally snaps out of his trance. Cyrus explains that racketeers were trying to cut in on his business illegally. After going along with them once, Cyrus backed out of the deal.

The crooks then hypnotized Cyrus and staged two apparent deaths. They planned to kill him with the stone obelisk, but the Phantom Stranger ruined their plans. The Stranger and Dr. Thirteen then plant a trap for the crooks and apprehend them.
