This is a Perry White story.

Synopsis:
Perry White and the staff of the Daily Planet reenact a death march across the desert that was originally led by Perry's great grandfather. Perry becomes a tyrant, giving orders that make the trek more difficult for the others. Though they have the opportunity to quit, Lois, Jimmy, and Clark press on until Perry falls and injures himself. Clark signals for help and the group is taken home.

Perry recovers in the hospital. He explains that the march was a loyalty test of his staff. He made a bet with the owner of a rival paper that despite the conditions, his staff would remain loyal. Since the staff proved themselves loyal, Perry wins 10,000 dollars for charity.
