Synopsis:
In the name of the Comoc Indians of Yucatan, a striking winged man called the Shrike robs a Monte Carlo casino and the Bank of England as the legendary demon-bird of Kukulcan. Hawkman and Hawkgirl stop his theft of sacred golden urns from the Midway City Museum, despite the Shrike's ability to shoot electrical charges from his wingtips.

The Shrike reveals to them that the Comocs had found him as a baby, trained him when they recognized him as their avenger of legend, and sent him out to recover the tribe's looted treasures. He grew at ten times the normal rate; now he is shocked to find that he is no longer the only winged being on Earth as his people claimed, and he questions his entire heritage. The shock deprives him of all his powers, and he offers restitution if Hawkman and Hawkgirl can help him find his true origins.

A medallion around his neck offers them a clue to his extraterrestrial background, so they voyage to the star Mizar in their ship, traveling through a time warp which separates the three, until Katar and Shayera realize that they have been sent to different parts of the future. The Shrike remains trapped in a future era, however, and when the planet Moronon's evil Boros Bron and his warriors attack and capture them, Hawkman and Hawkgirl are unable to prove that the Shrike is on board, and they are sentenced to die in the Valley of a Thousand Perils.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl fight off the effects of their capture, then face dinosaur-beasts, before finding a time-ball which had caused the time warp in their ship. They escape the valley by imagining themselves in the far future, then return to the present after gaining entrance to their guarded ship, to find the Shrike and bring him along, using the time-warp invisibility to overcome the guards. However, once he recovers his powers the Shrike finds himself as immune to the time effect as the planet's natives, and a battle ensues in which Bron is captured and the Shrike is revealed to be Toros Tos, son of the former monarch of Moronon. He had rocketed to Earth from his parents' ship during a sight-seeing tour, and now, with their deaths, he is the planet's ruler.

Later, Hawkman reflects on the similarities between the Shrike's origin and Superman's.
