The army asks Superman to help perform new weapons tests and to referee the annual army war games. During the games, Superman rescues one soldier, Fred Carson, several times when Carson takes reckless actions. Since Superman has been given the honorary rank of sergeant, he restricts Carson to the barracks.

Superman then learns that Carson has been reckless because he wants to prove his family is not cowardly. Carson’s brother Jim had run away during last year’s games. Fred acts recklessly one final time, but this time to rescue a child who has wandered into the games. Superman saves them both, then explains that a natural gas deposit had caused Jim Carson to run away at the last games. Fred has proven his own and his family’s bravery, so he gives up his recklessness.
