Synopsis:
Lt. William Storm is given his first command as skipper of a PT boat. On the first mission, the crew encounters a Japanese submarine. The boat is capsized, and Captain Storm is thrown overboard. Panic sets in as Storm's leg is injured. He is rescued by deck gunner Buddy Brown, but the sub finishes off the rest of the survivors including Storm's savior.

Lt. Storm is haunted by the memory of his failure. He is fitted with a wooden leg from the knee down to replace his injured limb. The Navy plans to return him stateside, but Storm vows to get revenge upon the sub that killed his crew. He rehabs his body and learns to function with the wooden leg. Then Storm proves that he is still capable to command a ship.

Lt. Storm is given another PT boat. One of his crewmen is Buddy's brother. The crew believe Storm to be a liability. Despite several good command decisions they still don't accept him. Storm's boat encounters the Japanese submarine again. This time he is more successfully in escaping the enemy vessel. He even rescues Buddy's brother. For his valiant action, Storm finally wins the respect of his crew.
