Hellcats

Name: Hellcats
Universe: Earth-1
First Appearance: Our Fighting Forces #106

History:
Hunter's Hellcats is the name given to a special squad of commandos made up almost entirely of ex-criminals that operated in both Europe and the Pacific during World War Two.

Lieutenant Ben Hunter had been a homicide detective in civilian life. He was ordered to take several prisoners from an army prison stockade, all of whom had been criminals before joining the army, and turn them into a special force of commandos. Although at first Hunter even had to use his fists at times to assert his authority over these men, he succeeded in turning them into a first-rate commando team. The Hellcats were often sent on suicide missions, yet in all of their reported adventures, they always returned.

The members of the Hellcats included Brute, the strongest and meanest of the group; Swinger, a former second-story man; Snake Oil, a former con artist; the acrobatic Juggler; Light Fingers, a pickpocket; Brains; Cracker; Hard Head; and Zig Zag.

The Hellcats also included a woman, Pvt. Heller, who was a superb markswoman and hand-to-hand fighter. Her father, a bank guard, had been fatally shot. Before he died, he named Tommy Carlin, a young tough, as his murderer. Heller vowed to avenge her father's death. After learning that Carlin had joined the army, Heller joined the WACS, hoping thereby to find him. Her hot temper landed her in a WAC guardhouse, where Hunter recruited her for the Hellcats. Deciding that becoming a Hellcat would give her the mobility she needed to find Carlin, Heller accepted Hunter's offer.

It is not known how many of the Hellcats survived World War Two. However, Ben Hunter himself survived and rose to the rank of colonel.

Hunter had identical twin sons, Air Force Major Nick Hunter and Captain Phil Hunter, a member of the Green Berets. Nick saved Phil's life three times; once when they both served in Korea. During the Vietnam War Nick's plane was shot down over Viet Cong territory and Nick was reported to be missing in action. Phil's time for reenlistment was coming up, but he decided to leave the military and search for his missing twin. After various adventures, Phil Hunter found his brother being held prisoner in a village under Viet Cong control. The Viet Cong took Phil prisoner, but he escaped and freed Nick and two other pilots being held captive there. All four men reached an American base, where the two brothers were reunited with their father.

The present activites and whereabouts of Colonel Ben Hunter and his sons are unknown.
