History:
Physician Dr. Charles McNider was asked by the police to treat an important witness against mobster "Killer" Moroni. The witness had been shot in the back. While McNider was treating the dying man, a thug threw a hand grenade at them. McNider was blinded by the explosion. As a result he decided to do what he could to fight crime, and began by embarking on a second career as a magazine writer who would use his stories to expose criminals.

McNider learned that he could now see in the dark but was blinded by light, much like an owl. He developed special "infrared glasses" that would enable him to see in daylight as well. McNider then adopted the costumed identity of Doctor Mid-Nite and used it to capture Maroni. To keep his new identity secret, McNider only wore the infrared goggles as Doctor Mid-Nite and pretended to be completely blind.

Doctor Mid-Nite was a member of the All-Star Squadron and spent many years as a member of the Justice Society of America until it disbanded in the 1950s. He returned to active membership in the Society when it was revived.

Powers:
Doctor Mid-Nite’s only super-power is his ability to see clearly in darkness, no matter how complete it is. The infrared lenses of his goggles enable him to see in the light as well.

Doctor Mid-Nite’s principal weapon is his "blackout bomb," which releases a cloud of pitch-black gas in which Doctor Mid-Nite can see but his adversaries cannot.

For a brief time Doctor Mid-Nite carried a weapon he had invented called a "cryotuber." With it he could take control of the nervous system of another person, thereby controlling his movements, and could temporarily freeze human flesh.

Doctor Mid-Nite is a superbly trained athlete who has somehow maintained a surprising amount of physical vitality into his late sixties. He also has great medical knowledge and skills.
