History:
Police detective Jim Corrigan and his fiancee, socialite Clarice Winston, were captured by the criminal "Gat" Benson. The thug knocked Corrigan unconscious, placed him in a barrel, filled it with cement, and two of Benson’s men dumped it off a wharf into a river.

The deceased Corrigan’s spirit, now in a void, began traveling toward a streaming light ahead of him, but somehow he was prevented from reaching the source. A Voice told him that his mission on Earth was unfinished, and that he was to return there to fight evil with the supernatural powers he now possessed. Back on Earth, Corrigan’s spirit confronted Benson and his two men, and as a result, Benson and one of his henchmen went mad, while the other accomplice died. Thus Corrigan was able to rescue Clarice.

Only Benson and his henchmen knew of Corrigan’s death, and Corrigan thereafter pretended to be a living man. He worked on the police force in his original identity while battling ordinary criminals and supernatural menaces as the Spectre. (Eventually, the Voice allowed Corrigan’s spirit to inhabit his ressurrected body, which the spirit could leave to act as the Spectre.) The Spectre was a founding member of the Justice Society of America and a member of the wartime All-Star Squadron.

When the evil astral being Azmodus came to Earth, the Spectre found himself unable to leave Corrigan’s body. Azmodus also was trapped in a human body. Two decades later, however, the Spectre was finally able to leave Corrigan’s body when Azmodus’s human host died, and the Spectre defeated Azmodus.

Recently, the Spectre participated in a battle with the Anti-Monitor at the dawn of time, preventing him from destroying the entire positive matter multiverse. As a result history was changed and only a single positive matter universe was created, and in the present, the Spectre lay unmoving in a trance.

The Spectre was able to send a portion of his being to battle the Shadow Creature that menaced heaven. But as the Spectre lay comatose, much of his own mystical energy, traveling back in time, was absorbed by the Spear of Destiny in 1945. Using the Spear, Adolf Hitler would have destroyed the universe in 1945 had not the Spectre emerged from his trance and alerted the Justice Society. The JSA has prevented the obliteration of the cosmos by the Spear, and the Spectre has gone to dwell with the Voice for eternity.

Powers:
The Spectre was the most powerful known being in the universe, capable of virtually any feat. His powers vastly increased over the years. At times the Spectre utilized the mystic Ring of Life to perform feats that were beyond his powers.
