History:
Mark Mandrill was a would-be alchemist trying to change lead into gold, when a vial of unknown chemical exploded in front of him. Terrified, Mandrill screamed, "Stay away from me!" and to his surprise, the chemicals did just that. In fact, the chemicals obeyed all his mental commands.

Mandrill fashioned a "magic wand" from the new compound (which he called "Mentachem") and began experimenting. He found that he could exert complete control over any pure and natural object.

Calling himself the Matter Master, Mandrill quickly proceeded to commit a bizarre series of robberies, until he was apprehended by Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Fortunately for Mandrill, the Hawks did not discover the secret of his wand, and he escaped.

Later, however, during a battle with the Justice League of America, Mandrill was forcibly separated from his wand, and left powerless.

While in prison, Mandrill managed to duplicate an imperfect version of the Mentachem formula. Crafting a smaller wand, he was able to summon the original from the JLA trophy room. He escaped from prison, but Hawkman and Hawkgirl quickly recaptured him.

Months later, Matter Master was recruited by arch-criminal Lex Luthor, when the latter briefly took command of the Secret Society of Super-Villains. This time, Mandrill was defeated by Hawkwoman and Captain Comet.

Though Mandrill has never been very successful as a criminal, he is a hard man to keep in jail, and his current whereabouts are unknown.

Powers:
Matter Master's "Mentachem Wand" gives him mental domination over any material in its natural state, including such diverse items as trees, diamonds, and solid aluminum rotary blades. This "domination" allows him to transport these pure materials, shrink or expand them, and even endow them with a semblance of temporary life. The wand is also able to absorb and release pure forms of energy such as hear, electricity, and white dwarf radiation.

Matter Master himself usually travels by riding on a large chunk of earth that his wand propels through the air.

In addition, Matter Master is capable of performing many of these amazing feats at once, even over great distances.

Because "Mentachem" defies hundredss of scientific principles and because it only works for the Matter Master, Lex Luthor hypothesized that Mandrill had in fact stumbled onto some form of powerful magic. But no definitive explanation of Matter Master's powers exists.

Mandrill is an extremely poor hand-to-hand combatant, and he is completely powerless without his wand.
