History:
Trained from infancy by her police detective father to the height of physical perfection, Dinah Drake had one goal in life; to become Gotham City’s foremost policewoman.

When his daughter’s application to the Police Academy was rejected, Richard Drake died of a broken heart, leaving Dinah a small inheritance with which she opened a florist shop.

Still determined to follow in her father’s crimefighting footsteps, Dinah took the inspiration of other masked mystery men to become a costumed avenger herself. Donning a blond wig and suitable wardrobe, Dinah Drake dubbed herself the Black Canary, and set out to fulfill her father’s dream.

At first, the Black Canary seemed to be a criminal who robbed other criminals, but this was merely a ruse to learn more about Gotham’s criminal underground. Ultimately, she crossed paths with Johnny Thunder, a member of the famed Justice Society, and revealed herself to be a true heroine.

As the years passed, the Black Canary joined the JSA while continuing to fight crime at the side of private detective Larry Lance. When the Justice Society disbanded, Dinah and Larry were wed, and the Black Canary went into retirement.

Several months after giving birth to a daughter also named Dinah, the erstwhile Black Canary and her doting husband were confronted by the villainous Wizard, who cursed her infant daughter, transforming the child’s cries into a sonic scream of destructive proportions.

Unable to cure the child, Dinah and Larry asked Johnny Thunder to have his genie-like magic thunderbolt take the child into his own mystical dimension, where he kept her in suspended animation, her body growing into young womanhood while she slept. As a final gesture, the thunderbolt made Johnny and the Lances forget what had really happened, allowing them to believe the baby had died.

Years later, while battling beside a reactivated Justice Society, Larry Lance was slain, and the Black Canary fatally irradiated by the alien monster called Aquarius. The Canary’s critical condition was not immediately apparent, and she decided to leave Earth-Two forever to begin life anew on Earth-One.

In the course of the transdimensional journey, the Canary began to succumb to her wounds and begged Superman to let her see her child’s grave one last time. Instead, the Man of Steel brought her to the thunderbolt’s dimension, where she discovered her daughter was still alive. When the dying Canary wished that her daughter could take her place, the thunderbolt transferred Dinah Drake Lance’s memories into her sleeping daughter’s mind, erasing the memory that the Black Canary was now her own daughter.

After putting the original Black Canary and her husband to rest in the thunderbolt dimension. Superman carried the new Black Canary to Earth-One and a new life.
