Creature Commandos

Name: Creature Commandos
Universe: Earth-1
First Appearance: Weird War Tales #93

History:
In the early crisis-filled days of World War Two, all branches of the American armed forces as well as a number of civilian groups joined forces on the top secret "Project M", the Allies' most bizarre experiment in psychological warfare. Reasoning that all men are subconsciously terrified by certain nightmarish archetypes. Project M – for Monster – sought to bring those nightmares to life by transforming three volunteers into living facsimiles of certain creatures out of folklore.

Warren Griffith, a 4F Oklahoma farmboy, suffered from lycanthropy, a form of insanity in which one imagines oneself a wolf, and a condition that a team of specially selected scientists and medical men managed to manifest physically in the young man, so that he would change uncontrollably into a snarling, bloodthirsty werewolf.

Sgt. Vincent Velcro avoided a thrity-year sentence in an army brig by volunteering for Project M. For six months he was injected with a compound composed of experimental chemicals and the blood extracted from the New Mexican vampire bat, until he was able to transform into a bat himself, needing human blood to survive like a legendary vampire.

Marine Private Elliot "Lucky" Taylor finally ran out of luck when he stepped on a land mine on some nameless Pacific island. Surgeons worked for weeks putting "Lucky" back together again, albeit not the way he was originally constructed, turning him instead into a super-powerful eight-feet-tall misshapen monstrosity, no longer a man so much as a mute patchwork monster.

Under the command of U.S. Army Intelligence officer Lt. Matthew Shrieve, these Creature Commandos were sent on missions no sane soldier would touch, becoming a legend wise men only whispered on the battlefields.

Several months after their formation, the Creature Commandos were joined by Dr. Myma Rhodes, a noted plastic surgeon who was attempting to heal an injured Lt. Shrieve when she accidentally inhaled the fumes of an unknown mix of experimental chemicals and found her hair transformed into living snakes. Shunned by her colleagues, the brave young woman joined the Creature Commandos as Dr. Medusa.

In the latter days of the war the Creature Commandos were court-martialed for some unstated offense and volunteered to test-fly an experimental spacecraft rather than face execution. Unfortunately, the rocket malfunctioned and was lost somewhere in deep space. Whether the Creature Commandos managed to somehow survive even this disaster remains unknown at this writing.
