Synopsis:
A mysterious, red-bearded, wheelchair-bound scientific genius calling himself the Chief brings together three people branded as "freaks" by normal society.
Rita Farr, movie actress and former Olympic swimmer, gains the power to shrink, stretch, or expand her body to giant size at will after she is swept down a jungle river and breathes strange volcanic vapors. Larry Trainor, test pilot, becomes dangerously radioactive and able to separate a weird being of radio-energy from his body when he flies an experimental sub-orbital craft through a radiation belt. Cliff Steele, world-famous daredevil, awakens to find his human brain transplanted into a robot body after his real body is totally destroyed in a racing-car crash.
As Elasti-Girl, Negative Man, and Robotman, the trio become a team of heroes, the Doom Patrol, under the Chief’s leadership. In one of their first joint efforts, they battle General Immortus, a seemingly immortal mastermind and an old foe of the Chief’s, for possession of a super-weapon contained in a crash-landed alien drone spaceship. The team succeeds in its mission, but General Immortus is apparently killed in the explosion of the alien craft.
